Antique George II Sterling Silver Trophy Tankard – London, c.1760
A truly handsome and historically evocative antique George II hallmarked sterling silver one-pint baluster tankard, crafted in London around 1760. Substantial in both presence and weight (298 grams), this elegant piece embodies the refined proportions and enduring craftsmanship of mid-18th century English silver.
The maker’s mark is slightly worn but strongly suggests the initials S.W, likely attributable to the noted London silversmith Samuel Wood. Its classic baluster form, comfortable handle, and generous one-pint capacity give the piece both practical charm and impressive display appeal.
Adding to its character and provenance, the tankard was later repurposed in the 19th century as a sporting trophy. Part of the hand-engraved inscription remains visible and reads:
“…Cricket & Athletic Club
100 Yards Handicap 1882
First Prize Presented by…”
The remainder has softened and faded with time, lending the mug a gentle patina of age and authentic historical use.
Condition:
Overall in very good antique condition. The tankard displays three notable dings consistent with age and use, and the engraved inscription has rubbed significantly over time. These features do not detract from its strong presence but rather contribute to its rich narrative and authenticity.
A fine and decorative piece of English silver with sporting heritage — equally suited to the serious collector, the lover of early Georgian silver, or as a distinguished statement object for display.
