Timeless Elegance & Everyday Luxury: The Enduring Story of Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver
There are certain names in the world that immediately evoke a sense of timeless elegance — and few do so quite like Tiffany & Co..
A Little Blue Box of History
I’ve always believed that some objects carry more than beauty — they carry stories. Tiffany & Co. is one of those rare houses whose story spans nearly two centuries and still feels as relevant and fascinating today as it did in the 1800s.
Founded in New York in 1837, Tiffany began as a modest stationery and fancy goods store before evolving into one of the most prestigious luxury houses in the world. Over time, it became synonymous with quality, refinement, and that unmistakable shade of blue that now represents aspiration and celebration across the globe.
But what many people don’t realise is that Tiffany’s legacy is not limited to jewellery alone. The company has long been celebrated for its exceptional sterling silver — producing everything from grand presentation pieces and trophies to the most charming everyday tableware. In fact, Tiffany played a major role in establishing the American sterling silver standard of 925, a benchmark still used internationally today.
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Tiffany silver became a symbol of refinement in well-appointed homes. From elegant tea services to beautifully crafted dining accessories, these pieces were designed not only to be used, but admired and passed down through generations.
Why Tiffany Silver Remains So Collectable
Collectors and design lovers continue to seek out Tiffany silver for a number of reasons. The craftsmanship is consistently excellent, the designs are timeless rather than trend-driven, and the brand carries a universal prestige that transcends eras. Even smaller functional objects — particularly those produced in limited quantities — are now highly sought after.
There is also something deeply satisfying about owning a Tiffany piece that was meant to be used and enjoyed. Unlike jewellery kept in a safe, Tiffany tableware and accessories live within daily rituals: morning coffee, shared meals, quiet celebrations. They bring heritage into the present in the most natural way.
A Charming Tiffany Conversation Piece
Featured alongside this article is a delightful sterling silver Tiffany & Co. salt shaker and pepper grinder set — a perfect example of functional luxury. Beautifully crafted and wonderfully tactile, these pieces embody everything collectors love about Tiffany silver: quality, weight, and timeless design.
What makes them particularly engaging is their dual nature. They are both practical dining accessories and unmistakable conversation pieces. Guests instantly recognise the Tiffany name, yet are often surprised to encounter it in such a charming and usable form. It’s precisely this blend of prestige and everyday function that makes Tiffany silver so appealing to collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Pieces like these remind us that luxury does not always need to be grand or extravagant. Sometimes it is found in the quiet pleasure of a beautifully made object, used and appreciated over time.
A Legacy That Endures
Nearly two centuries after its founding, Tiffany & Co. remains one of the most recognisable luxury houses in the world. Yet beyond the famous blue box lies a rich heritage of craftsmanship and design that continues to captivate collectors and admirers.
For me, the joy of handling and offering Tiffany silver lies not only in its value, but in its story — a story of artistry, innovation, and enduring elegance. And perhaps most importantly, a reminder that the finest objects are those that are both beautiful and meant to be enjoyed.
Welcome!
Hi everyone,
I suppose this is the most basic way to start a first blog for someone who has never written anything, except a whatsapp or text!..
Antique Mayer & Sherratt trio

The factory was based in Stafford Street, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England and after 1920 operated under the name of Melba china until 1941.
Quack Quack!!
We are not just an antique shop, we are also home to a family of geese, quacker and muscovy ducks...all living the ideal free-range life...lol. This being said, we unfortunately do not allow other pets on the property, but instead encourage clients to spend some time socializing and feeding our ducks as they form an integral part of our property and have a very special place in our family.
We provide packets of feed and ask clients to donate R5 towards this cause.
