Rare & Highly Collectable 19th Century Staffordshire Pottery Toby Jug – “Home Brewed Ale”
A wonderfully characterful and highly collectable antique 19th-century Staffordshire pottery Toby jug, modelled as a jovial and corpulent gentleman seated astride a barrel.
Rich in personality and period charm, this impressive example captures the humour and craftsmanship synonymous with traditional Staffordshire figural pottery.
The figure is beautifully detailed and hand-decorated in vibrant enamels, wearing a striking cobalt blue coat, pink trousers and a finely patterned waistcoat, finished with a classic tricorn hat. The hat cleverly forms the lid of the jug and is adorned with sculpted hops — a delightful nod to the jug’s inscription, “Home Brewed Ale”, emblazoned across the barrel.
Toby jugs of this size and decorative quality were often produced as statement tavern or domestic pieces and today remain highly sought after by collectors of English ceramics and traditional pub memorabilia.
The substantial scale, lively modelling and charming narrative design make this an outstanding display piece with true period authenticity.
Marked S1815 to the base, further enhancing its collectable appeal.
