John Biccard "Pablo" Crushed Marble Figurine — Rare Early South African Sculpture, Shepherd Boy Self-Portrait, Great Condition

Meet Pablo. Shepherd boy. Self-portrait. South African art history in crushed marble.

There are collectables, and then there are pieces that occupy an entirely different category — objects that carry within them the vision, the hand and the soul of a genuine artist. This is one of those pieces. Pablo is a rare and highly collectable crushed marble sculpture by celebrated South African artist John Biccard, and he is, by all accounts, one of the most personal works the artist ever created.

Pablo is a shepherd boy — one of John Biccard's earliest and most beloved characters — and he is widely believed to be a self-portrait of the artist himself. To own Pablo is therefore not merely to own a sculpture. It is to own a fragment of John Biccard's own self-image, rendered in his distinctive medium and unmistakable hand at the beginning of what would become a remarkable and enduring artistic career.

The figure reclines in a posture of relaxed ease and contemplative calm — stretched out, weight resting forward on crossed arms, legs extended behind, head turned slightly to one side with an expression of quiet intelligence and gentle amusement. It is a pose that communicates character immediately — this is not a passive decorative object but a fully realised personality frozen mid-thought, mid-rest, mid-story.

The surface work is extraordinary. Biccard's signature style — the intricate incised patterning that covers the figure's clothing and limbs — is rendered here with exceptional detail and care. Flowing spiral motifs sweep across the legs and body, segmented panel forms define the arms and shoulders, and finely worked hair and facial detail bring the face to vivid life. The crushed marble medium gives the surface a warm, matte, almost tactile quality — somewhere between stone and bone in its visual character — that photographs beautifully and presents with quiet authority in any setting.

Looking closely at the detailed face photographs, the modelling of Pablo's features is genuinely impressive — strong brows, clear eyes, a well-defined nose and a slight suggestion of a knowing smile — a face with real personality and presence. The helmet or cap he wears — decorated with ram's horns in Biccard's characteristic mythological style — adds a layer of narrative and symbolic depth that rewards careful looking.

The base is signed, confirming the piece's provenance. The name of a previous owner — Nico Heyns — is also inscribed to the underside, as clearly visible in the base photograph. This in no way affects the condition, integrity or value of the sculpture and is simply part of its personal history and provenance chain.

Early pieces such as Pablo are particularly sought after by serious collectors and are increasingly rare to find in good condition on the open market.
