This finely crafted open salt cellar is executed in the elegant George III style, reflecting the neoclassical refinement and balanced proportions that characterised English silver of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

During the Georgian era (1760–1820), salt was an important and symbolically significant element of the dining table. Prior to the widespread use of individual salt shakers, open salts were placed along the table to be shared among diners. The quality and ornamentation of these vessels often reflected the host’s status and taste. Pierced silverwork, in particular, became highly fashionable during the latter half of the 18th century, influenced by architectural fret patterns and classical decorative motifs.

This example features an attractively pierced silver-plated frame with delicate fretwork, allowing light to pass through and interact beautifully with the rich cobalt blue glass liner. The use of coloured glass liners became popular both for aesthetic reasons and for practical protection of the silver from corrosion caused by salt.
