Pair of French Louis XV Style Gilt Bronze (Ormolu) Two-Light Candelabra

An elegant and highly decorative pair of French Louis XV style gilt bronze (ormolu) two-branch candelabra, dating to the late 19th century and executed in the exuberant Rococo Revival taste.

Each candelabrum rises from a richly modelled scrolling base adorned with naturalistic acanthus leaves, stylised foliage and flowing C-scrolls. The sculptural composition ascends organically, as though the structure itself has grown from the earth — a hallmark of the Rococo aesthetic. The central stem issues two sinuous arms, each terminating in a finely cast floral drip pan and shaped candle nozzle. The asymmetrical movement and botanical vitality reflect the decorative vocabulary of mid-18th century France under the reign of Louis XV.

The gilded bronze surface retains a warm, mellow patina consistent with age, with the gilding settled beautifully into the recesses of the chasing. The quality of casting is particularly notable: crisp leaf veining, deeply undercut scrolls, and carefully defined floral elements indicate skilled late 19th-century craftsmanship, most likely Parisian in origin.

Style & Context
The design draws inspiration from the Rocaille movement that flourished during the reign of Louis XV (1715–1774). Characterised by asymmetry, movement, and motifs drawn from nature — shells, foliage, blossoms and scrolling tendrils — Rococo interiors were designed to evoke elegance, intimacy and fluidity.

During the late 19th century, particularly under the Second Empire and into the Belle Époque period, there was a strong revival of 18th-century French decorative arts. Fine ormolu works such as these were produced for grand townhouses and country estates, combining historical inspiration with superb technical execution.
