Victorian | Gilded Cast Metal & Pressed Glass Centrepiece | Foliate Stand with Ruffled Bowl | c.1880–1910

A centrepiece of this kind was never merely a vessel — it was an argument about what a well-appointed table should look like, made in metal and glass.

The decorative centrepiece — an elevated stand bearing a glass bowl or dish, designed to occupy the centre of a dining or display table — was one of the defining objects of the Victorian and Edwardian domestic interior. Produced across Britain and Continental Europe from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, these pieces combined the skills of the metal founder and the glassmaker in a single object, with the stand providing architectural presence and the glass bowl the lightness and brilliance that the overall composition required. The form reached its most elaborate expression in the 1880s and 1890s, when the naturalistic vocabulary of cast metal decoration — fern, foliage, rope-twist columns, and foliate bases — was at its most inventive and confident. Examples of this type, with intertwined rope-twist stems and richly cast foliate bases, are characteristic of the better-quality production of the period and were intended as statement pieces for the dining room or drawing room sideboard.

The stand is cast metal, gilded, and takes the form of two intertwined rope-twist columns rising from a shaped, organic base decorated in high relief with large fern fronds and foliate motifs covering the entire surface. The columns are joined at the top by a gilded circular collar fitted with small cast leaf details, which supports the glass bowl. The glass bowl is pressed glass of wide, shallow form with a dramatically ruffled and jagged rim — the edge deeply irregular and boldly modelled, giving the piece considerable visual energy from above. The bowl interior carries a pressed starburst medallion at the centre, with radiating panels and floral details in the pressed glass extending to the rim. The gilding on the metal stand is warm and even throughout.

There are no chips or damage to the glass bowl. The gilded metal stand is intact with no losses to the gilding or casting. The piece is in excellent condition throughout.
