Antique Ottoman Turkish Copper Hamam Bowl (Hamam Tası)
19th Century | Hand-Embossed | Traditional Turkish Bath Vessel

A striking 19th-century Ottoman Turkish copper bath bowl, traditionally known as a Hamam Tası — an essential and symbolic object within the ritual of the Turkish hammam.

Dating to the 1800s, this beautifully hand-crafted example reflects the artistry and functionality of historic Ottoman metalwork. Formed from high-quality copper, the bowl features an embossed and hand-hammered decorative surface, characteristic of traditional Turkish craftsmanship. The exterior has been polished, revealing warm copper tones that glow richly in the light.

As is customary, the interior was originally tin-lined — a practical and hygienic finish historically applied to protect the copper and ensure safe use in wet bathing environments. Copper’s natural antimicrobial properties further enhanced its suitability for hammam rituals.

The piece remains in generally very good condition for its age. There is some visible tin-plating loss to the interior bowl, consistent with age and historic use, which adds to its authenticity and antique character. The structure is sound, and the decorative exterior presents beautifully.

Most traditional hamam bowls feature a subtle central raised dome or “navel,” designed to improve grip when scooping and pouring water. Beyond its practical purpose, this form has become an iconic design element of Ottoman bath culture.

With its generous diameter of 18.3 cm and substantial weight of 230 grams, this bowl has a pleasing solidity in the hand. It functions beautifully as a decorative object, a collector’s piece of Islamic or Middle Eastern metalwork, or as a distinctive interior accent.
