Antique Silver-Plated Toddy Ladle | Spiral-Twist Ebony Handle
A long handle and a small bowl, made for reaching into the punch and serving a glass at a time.
Toddy and punch ladles were used to serve drinks made with spirits, water, sugar and spices, often warmed for winter gatherings. Their long handles let a serving be drawn from a punch bowl, while handles of wood or horn gave a comfortable grip. Such ladles are particularly associated with eighteenth- and nineteenth-century drinking customs.
The ladle has a deep, rounded bowl with a stepped rim, joined to a slender silver-plated stem. The ebony handle is plain at either end and turned in a spiral twist through the middle. It finishes in a silver-plated cap. The bowl is bright inside and out.
Very good condition, with no damage. The handle is secure at both ends.

The toddy ladle is a form particular to the custom of punch, and the contrast of bright plate and black spiral-turned ebony is part of its appeal. With its round bowl and long handle, it belongs naturally among collections of antique drinking and serving accessories.
The punch is drunk and the evening ends; the ladle is rinsed and put away for the next one.
