Antique Sterling Silver Pepperette — Adie Brothers Birmingham 1924, Pear Form, Four Pad Feet

This charming antique sterling silver pepperette is a fine and joyful example of the table silversmith's art — small enough to sit neatly in the palm of your hand, yet rich in detail and beautifully proportioned. Made in Birmingham in 1924 by the highly regarded firm of Adie Brothers Ltd, it carries a full and clear set of hallmarks and is in very good condition for its century of age.

The form is a plump, swelling pear shape — rounded and satisfying, with a gently narrowing neck that rises to meet the pierced domed cap. The cap itself is beautifully made, with a shaped and moulded border that echoes the curves of the body, pierced with neat round holes for dispensing pepper, and finished with a small turned finial at the apex. The piece is raised on four elegant pad feet — each a small, teardrop-shaped support — which lift the body cleanly from the table and give the whole design a light, almost playful quality.

Viewed from above, the generous curves of the body, the four spreading feet, and the shapely cap combine to create a piece that is as sculptural and appealing as it is functional. This is a pepperette that would look equally at home on a dressed dinner table, a collector's display shelf, or a dressing table as a decorative object in its own right.
