The dolphin was the Regency period's favourite supporting act — it appeared beneath salts, epergnes, and centrepieces with such frequency that it became shorthand for a confident, nautically inspired taste.

This shell-and-dolphin salt cellar is one of the most recognisable forms in the English silver repertoire, rooted in the marine aesthetic that dominated Regency and early Victorian decorative arts. Inspired by cultural touchstones such as the Prince Regent’s Brighton pavilion, shell-form salts on dolphin supports were produced across London, Birmingham, and Sheffield workshops. While many examples survive, pieces with well-cast, fully detailed dolphin feet represent the upper tier of the type.

The salt takes the form of a naturally modelled scallop shell, with deeply ribbed radiating flutes across the interior bowl. At the back, a coiled nautilus rises as a decorative terminal, providing structural support and visual interest. The cellar stands on three cast dolphin supports, each rendered with scaled bodies, open mouths, and curling tails — the detail across the fish scales and facial features is crisp and well-preserved. The overall finish remains bright throughout. Hallmarks are present to the base but rubbed to illegibility; the silver is consistent with sterling by weight, finish, and casting quality.

There are no splits, repairs, or significant dents. All dolphin supports are present and structurally sound. The condition is very good for age.
