Charming Antique Japanese Figural Netsuke – Hotei with Small Dragon
A delightful and characterful antique Japanese figural carving, likely a decorative netsuke, depicting the jovial figure of Hotei — the Laughing Buddha — reclining contentedly with a small dragon companion. Hotei represents happiness, abundance, and good fortune, while the dragon symbolises protection, wisdom, and power. Together, they create a truly auspicious and captivating miniature scene.
Finely carved in natural bone with a warm, aged patina, this piece captures the playful spirit and craftsmanship for which Japanese miniature carvings are so admired. The figure rests on a later carved wooden display base, ideal for display in a cabinet of curiosities or as part of a Japanese art collection.
Netsuke originated in Japan as functional toggles used to secure small personal items to kimono sashes during the Edo period. By the late 19th and early 20th century, they became highly collectible works of miniature art, prized for intricate carving and storytelling.
This charming example likely dates to the early–mid 20th century and was carved for the decorative and collector market. A wonderful conversation piece with warmth, personality, and cultural charm.
