Colclough | Pink Rose Bone China Milk Jug | England, c. 1955–1960s

A round little jug in pale pink, with a spray of roses where the hand turns it to pour.

Colclough began in Longton, Staffordshire, under Herbert Joseph Colclough in 1897. Through changes in ownership and amalgamations, the name became part of the Ridgway group; Ridgway Potteries Ltd was established under that name in 1955, with Colclough continuing as a bone china brand. The crown backstamp, red "Colclough" script and reference to Ridgway Potteries Ltd place this jug within the company's mid-20th-century production.

The jug has a rounded, bellied body on a gilt-banded foot, a wavy gilt rim rising to a broad pouring lip, and a scrolled handle with gilded detailing. Sprays of pink roses with green leaves and soft lilac accents run around the body on a pale pink ground; the interior is white. The backstamp shows a crown above "Bone China" and the characters "A 46 4", with "Colclough" in red script, "Made in England" and "A Product of Ridgway Potteries Ltd" below.

The jug is in good condition, with no chips or cracks. There is wear to the gilding, most noticeably along the handle.

Collector Appeal

The rounded body and broad pouring lip give the jug an appealing, practical form. Its pale pink ground and rose sprays match the Colclough cake plate and trio, allowing the three pieces to be brought together as a small, coordinated tea service.

Other Colclough pink rose pieces from the shop: cake plate and trio.

Just enough milk for a pot of tea, and just enough roses to go with it.
