The Dutch silversmith's instinct was always to tell a story — a ship on the handle, a face at the joint, a twist in the stem, as though a plain surface were a kind of poverty.

The Netherlands has a long-established tradition in decorative silver, and the souvenir spoon became one of its most recognisable forms during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Produced in centres such as Schoonhoven and Amsterdam, these spoons were typically made in the Dutch second standard of .833 silver and combined functional form with narrative detail. Sailing ship finials were among the most characteristic motifs, reflecting the country’s deep maritime identity and its long association with trade and navigation.

The spoon is of teaspoon size with a rounded oval bowl. The stem is formed in a twisted rope or barley-twist pattern, introducing movement and texture along its length. At the junction with the bowl sits a small figural mask, adding a further decorative element. The handle terminates in a cast three-dimensional sailing vessel, with defined hull and ribbed sail detail, surmounted by a small loop at the masthead.

The silver retains a soft, slightly oxidised tone within the recesses of the twist and finial, providing natural contrast against the polished surfaces.

The piece is in very good condition. The finial is intact with no losses, and the stem detail remains crisp. The bowl shows no dents or splits. Hallmarks are present to the bowl, though small and best read under magnification.
