Enamelware Washbowl and Jug | Stencilled Floral Decoration | Enamelled Steel | Mid-to-Late Twentieth Century

Before bathrooms were universal, this was the morning ritual — jug to bowl, water to face — and the decoration was there to make the necessity feel like something more.

The washbowl and jug set was a fixture of domestic life across much of the world well into the twentieth century, and the tradition of decorating enamelware with bold floral motifs was particularly strong across Central and Eastern Europe, where factories produced these sets in large numbers for everyday household use. The decoration on this example — a large, flaring chrysanthemum in orange and red with yellow outer petals, flanked by smaller yellow and black flowers and bold green foliage against a sky blue ground that fades to white — has the character of Soviet or Eastern European enamelware from the mid-to-late twentieth century, though no maker's mark is present to confirm the origin with certainty. The stencilled application gives the flowers a graphic quality that reads with considerable force against the pale ground, and the design sits at an interesting point between the purely utilitarian and something with genuine decorative ambition.

The jug is tall and waisted, with a wide flared rim, a loop handle and the full chrysanthemum arrangement across the body. The sky blue ground deepens at the shoulder and rim. The bowl is wide and shallow with a rolled rim, carrying the same floral arrangement across its exterior. The interiors of both pieces are white. Together they present as a matched set, consistent in decoration and ground colour.

Both pieces show honest age-consistent wear. There is enamel loss at the rim and base of the jug, and some wear to the rim of the bowl, consistent with regular use over many years. There are no holes or structural faults in either piece. The decoration remains vivid and largely intact on both.
