The Edwardians understood that even a pot of cold cream deserved a silver hat.

The silver-topped dressing table jar was a staple of the Edwardian vanity, produced in considerable numbers by the Birmingham trade to meet demand from a middle class newly persuaded that grooming was a virtue. Birmingham's assay office, established in 1773, had by the early twentieth century become the principal hallmarking centre for small silver wares of precisely this kind — functional, decorative, and made to be used daily. The form pairs a pressed glass body with a fitted sterling silver lid, the lid doing the decorative work while the glass provides utility. G & C Ltd were a registered Birmingham maker working in this productive period; pieces of this type were made for the dressing tables of comfortable Edwardian households and have survived in reasonable numbers, though seldom in this condition.

The glass body is octagonal in section, with twelve flat-cut vertical panels running the full height of the jar, creating a faceted surface that catches the light cleanly. The body is clear throughout with no visible colour or impurity. The sterling silver lid is circular and domed, worked in repoussé with a continuous border of open roses and foliage encircling the outer edge. Within this floral border, a beaded oval garland frames a plain domed cartouche at the centre — left unmonogrammed, which broadens its appeal considerably. The hallmark strip on the silver collar reads clearly: maker's mark G & C Ltd, anchor for Birmingham assay, lion passant confirming sterling standard, and date letter for 1912. The interior of the lid retains its original gilding, warm and largely intact against the bright silver.

The piece presents in very good condition for its age. The lid exterior shows light surface patina consistent with over a century of existence, most visible in the recessed areas of the repoussé work. The glass body is free of chips, cracks, and significant scratching. The lid seats and removes cleanly.
