Gabriel de Jongh (1913–1994) is among the most celebrated and collected painters in the history of South African art. Born in the Cape, he devoted the greater part of his working life to the landscape of the Western Cape — the mountain ranges, river valleys, wheat fields and coastal scenery of the region he knew intimately and returned to repeatedly across a career spanning six decades. De Jongh trained under Pieter Wenning and was deeply influenced by the South African Impressionist tradition, developing a palette and a painterly touch that were entirely his own: warm, saturated earth tones, bold impasto handling of rock and mountain surfaces, and a distinctive treatment of light that captures the particular clarity of the Cape atmosphere with remarkable fidelity. His mountain landscapes — especially those depicting the ranges of the Boland and the Hex River Valley — are his most sought-after works, and examples in good condition command consistent and strong prices at South African auction. De Jongh exhibited widely during his lifetime and his work is held in numerous private and institutional collections across South Africa.

The painting depicts a broad Cape mountain landscape under a clear summer sky with billowing cumulus cloud. A rugged mountain range fills the upper two-thirds of the composition, the peaks rendered in the characteristic De Jongh palette of warm pink, ochre and violet — the granite rock faces catching the afternoon light from the left. The middle ground opens to a wide, rocky river valley with a shallow stream reflecting the sky, flanked by indigenous trees and scrub. In the right foreground, cattle water at the river's edge, their forms loosely indicated in De Jongh's direct, economic manner. The handling throughout is confident and assured — the impasto textures of the mountain surfaces contrasting with the smoother, more fluid treatment of the sky and water. The painting is signed in the lower right in De Jongh's characteristic hand. It is presented in a pale grey stepped frame with silver inner slip.

The canvas is in excellent condition with no damage, restoration or significant craquelure. The paint surface is stable and intact throughout.
