Rare Vintage Lucia Ware Ceramic Deer — Deep Green Glazed Bokkie, LUCIA 5001, South African Mid-Century Collectable, 1950s

The real thing. The original. Unmistakably Lucia.

This is not a replica, an impression, or an interpretation. This is a genuine vintage Lucia Ware bokkie — the iconic South African mid-century ceramic deer that has become one of the most sought-after and beloved collectables in the country's decorative arts heritage. Bearing the original LUCIA 5001 model mark clearly pressed into the base glaze, this piece is the authentic original from which all later reproductions and brass interpretations have drawn their inspiration.

And in this deep, lustrous bottle green glaze, it is simply breathtaking.

The form is instantly recognisable to anyone who grew up in South Africa — the impossibly elongated legs tapering to a graceful flared disc base, the arched and attentive neck, the oversized ears caught at the moment of alert, the compact rounded body with its suggestion of a raised tail. It is a silhouette so perfectly resolved, so completely of its era, that it has never needed revision or improvement in the seventy-odd years since it was first produced. Lucia Ware understood something fundamental about the South African aesthetic — an affinity for the wild, the graceful, the characterful — and captured it completely in this one small figure.

What makes this particular example especially desirable is the glaze. The rich deep olive and bottle green — varying from mossy sage to deep forest tones across the surface — gives this bokkie a depth and presence that the more common caramel and honey glazed versions simply do not have. The glaze pools and shifts across the contours of the body, deeper in the recesses and lighter on the raised curves, creating a surface that is genuinely beautiful to look at from every angle. The interior of the large cupped ears is finished in a deep near-black glaze — a striking contrast detail that adds drama and definition to the head.

Looking closely at the detailed photographs, the modelling is superb — the tiny pointed features of the face, the delicate suggestion of hooves, the fluid line of the neck — all show the skill and care of the original Lucia Ware craftspeople. The glaze surface is excellent throughout with no chips, cracks or crazing anywhere on the piece.

The base mark — LUCIA 5001 — is clearly legible, pressed into the wet clay before firing in the manner typical of Lucia Ware production, and confirms this as a genuine period piece from the 1950s production run.

About Lucia Ware

Lucia Ware was a South African ceramic manufacturer producing distinctive hand-finished decorative pottery from the mid-20th century. Their animal figures — particularly the iconic elongated deer or bokkie — became defining objects of South African mid-century interior culture, appearing on mantelpieces, sideboards and shelves across the country. Original Lucia Ware pieces in good condition are increasingly scarce and seriously collectable, particularly in the rarer glaze colours of which this deep green is among the most desirable.
