BACKGROUND

Royal Winton — the trade name of Grimwades Ltd of Stoke-on-Trent — is the acknowledged master of the English chintz tradition, having produced more chintz patterns than any other manufacturer. The 'Richmond' pattern was originally registered in Canada in 1938, its bold daffodil and narcissus design on a fresh green ground making it one of the most distinctive and immediately recognisable of all Royal Winton chintzes. Demand for Royal Winton chintz never truly subsided, and in 1995 the factory undertook a formal revival of its most beloved patterns — 'Richmond' among them — reissuing them to the same exacting standard as the originals, including the iconic round backstamp. These 1995 pieces are clearly dated on the base, making them fully transparent as reissues rather than period originals, and they are now themselves collectible as part of the chintz revival story. Unused examples in this condition are seldom encountered.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Two trios, each comprising a teacup, saucer and side plate in the Richmond shape — Royal Winton's classic round-edged form with a gently scalloped rim. The all-over 'Richmond' chintz transfer covers every exterior surface: yellow and orange daffodils, white narcissi with red-ringed centres, vivid green strap leaves, and soft touches of blue and pink against a pale celadon ground. The cup interior is plain cream-white. A fine gilt rim line finishes all pieces.

CONDITION STATEMENT

Unused. No chips, cracks or crazing on either trio. Gilding is perfect and unfaded on all six pieces. The transfer is sharp, vivid and fully registered throughout. Both trios are in pristine, display-ready condition.
