There is a particular confidence in inter-war Longton bone china decoration — a reliance on repetition, control, and hand-finished detail that gives even modest patterns a sense of discipline and intent.

J. H. Middleton & Co. operated the Delphine Pottery at Chelson Street, Longton, Staffordshire, from 1889 until 1941, when wartime consolidation brought its independent production to a close. During the inter-war years, Delphine produced steady, export-conscious bone china for the domestic middle market, identifiable through its banner and crown backstamp and its consistent use of pattern numbering rather than named designs. Pattern 1937 belongs firmly to this output — a commercially produced but carefully finished decorative suite intended for everyday use rather than high presentation ware.

This trio comprises a footed teacup, saucer, and side plate in bone china with softly scalloped rims. The decoration is built around a structured gilt vine and leaf garland that runs continuously across each piece, forming a controlled framework for small hand-applied enamel flower clusters. These appear in alternating tones of turquoise, cobalt blue, and red-orange, applied directly over the gilt transfer work, giving each cluster a slight variation in intensity and placement. The cup handle is fully gilt, with matching gilt rims to all pieces and a fine interior rim line to the cup. The overall effect is formal but not rigid, with colour introduced sparingly against a bright cream ground.

Minor surface wear is present consistent with age and careful domestic use. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing.
