A jug this well made was never intended to sit in a cupboard — it was made for a table worth setting.

Hand-cut lead crystal reached its widest domestic production in the mid-twentieth century, when glasshouses across Britain, Ireland, Bohemia and Central Europe were producing tableware of genuine quality for the household market. The combination of deep crosshatch diamond cutting on the lower body with wheel-engraved floral decoration on the upper body is characteristic of this period — a division of technique that allowed the cutter to demonstrate two distinct skills on a single piece. Lead crystal, with its high refractive index and characteristic weight, rewards this kind of cutting in a way that ordinary glass does not; the edges stay sharper, the light breaks more decisively, and the piece retains its brilliance over decades of use.

The jug stands on a flat circular foot cut with radial panels and a starburst to the base, rising through a waisted stem into a broad lower body cut overall with a crosshatch diamond pattern. Above this, the body opens into a tall, gently flared form decorated with two large wheel-engraved roses in full bloom, each accompanied by engraved leaf foliage that extends across the surface in loose, naturalistic sprays. The upper body and rim are plain, allowing the engraving to read clearly against the uncut glass. The handle is applied, plain and substantial, with a firm lower attachment. The spout is formed from the rim with a simple curved pour.

There are no chips, cracks, scratches or repairs. The diamond cutting is crisp throughout and the engraved decoration is well-defined. The glass is clear with no cloudiness or interior residue.
