There are names in British silversmithing that require no introduction, and Mappin & Webb is emphatically one of them. This richly decorated three-piece tea service — every surface alive with hand-chased repousse work — is Victorian craftsmanship at its most accomplished.

Mappin & Webb was established in Sheffield in 1774 and grew through the nineteenth century to become one of the foremost names in British silver and silverplate, holding Royal Warrants and supplying the finest households, clubs and hotels of the Victorian and Edwardian era. Their Sheffield workshops produced work of exceptional technical quality across both sterling silver and electroplated ranges, and the firm's reputation was such that even their plated ware was considered a mark of distinction. By the mid-Victorian period, Mappin & Webb had premises on Oxford Street in London and counted the Royal Family among their patrons — a standing that placed their name firmly at the apex of the British silversmithing trade.

The decoration on this service is executed in the repousse technique — a method of metalworking in which the design is hammered and chased from the reverse of the metal to create a raised, three-dimensional surface relief. It is one of the most labour-intensive and skilful techniques in the silversmith's repertoire, and the quality of the work on this service is immediately apparent: the acanthus leaf gadroon border at the shoulder of each piece, the precisely executed vertical panel divisions, and the densely chased scrolling floral and foliate cartouches on the lower body all speak to the hand of a trained craftsman rather than a mechanised press. The result is a surface of genuine visual richness, one that catches and reflects light differently at every angle.

Electro Britannia Metal — the base material used here — is a high-quality Victorian plating substrate: a close-grained alloy of tin, antimony and copper that accepts and retains electroplated silver exceptionally well, producing a finer, more even surface than cheaper base metals. Mappin & Webb favoured it for their quality plated ranges, and pieces from this period were produced to a standard intended to serve several generations. The Sheffield registration mark and pattern number 12425 confirm period Victorian production.

The gilded interiors of the milk jug and sugar bowl are a further mark of quality and original specification: gilt washing of the interiors was standard practice on better Victorian silverplate to protect against the corrosive effects of sugar and dairy, and its survival in good condition here speaks to the careful use and storage this service has received.
The teapot is of a broad, rounded, slightly panelled body form on a domed circular foot, with a long curved spout and a substantial scrolling handle with ivory-coloured insulators at the upper and lower terminals. The hinged domed lid carries a finely chased foliate medallion surround and is surmounted by an ivory-coloured composition finial on a silver-mounted post. The body decoration is arranged in two registers: the upper shoulder carries a bold acanthus gadroon in high relief, with leafy sprays emerging between the lobes; the lower body is divided into vertical panels by incised lines, each panel filled with a dense repousse cartouche of scrolling acanthus, flowers and foliate ornament. The foot is plain and domed with a moulded rim.

The milk jug follows the identical form and decorative scheme in miniature: a rounded, panelled body on a domed foot, with a high-arched handle and a scalloped lip spout. The upper shoulder carries the matching gadroon border; the lower body panels repeat the chased floral and foliate cartouches. The interior is gilt-washed, bright and largely intact. The open sugar bowl is of a generous two-handled campana form on a domed foot, with a pair of elegant scrolling loop handles with foliate terminals. The body carries the same two-register decoration as its companions, with the acanthus gadroon at the shoulder and the repousse floral panels below. The interior is gilt-washed. The underside of the teapot is stamped: MAPPIN & WEBB / ELECTRO BRITANNIA METAL / SHEFFIELD LONDON / 12425.

Condition

Very good antique condition. All three pieces have been professionally or carefully polished and present well, with the silver plate retaining good coverage and brightness across the decorative surfaces. There is age-appropriate minor wear to the plate on high points of the repousse work and on the handle terminals of the teapot, consistent with honest use and age — this is to be expected on Victorian electroplate and does not detract from the visual presentation of the set. The gilt interiors of the milk jug and sugar bowl are largely intact with some age wear and minor spotting, as is consistent with pieces of this age. The ivory-coloured composition finial and handle insulators on the teapot are intact and secure. No dents, splits, solder repairs or damage noted. A handsome and presentable set in good honest antique condition.
