A thimble is among the smallest things a collector can pursue — and, for that reason, one of the most exacting.

Mason's Patent Ironstone China holds one of the longest continuous histories in English ceramics. Patented by Charles James Mason in 1813, its dense, durable body allowed for a level of colour and decoration that softer wares could not sustain. The name passed through several hands over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries — including Francis Morley, G.L. Ashworth & Brothers, and later the Wedgwood Group — yet the original patent title endured as a marker of continuity. Collector’s thimbles bearing the Mason’s mark were produced in the later twentieth century, when established factories turned to small-scale decorative objects alongside their tableware.

This example departs from the usual smooth-sided collector’s form. The crown is worked with shallow dimples, echoing the functional sewing thimble, and is bordered by a narrow gilt band. The body widens slightly toward the base before tapering upward, with a second gilt band at the rim. The decoration is a vivid polychrome floral bouquet set against a warm cream ground: a fully opened pink rose anchors the composition, accompanied by yellow and purple anemones, fine blue florets, and green foliage. The motif repeats around the body with slight variation, maintaining balance without strict uniformity. The base carries the standard green crown backstamp for Mason’s Patent Ironstone, with no pattern name recorded.

The condition is excellent. The transfer decoration remains crisp and complete, and the gilding shows only the lightest surface wear. There are no chips, cracks, or losses.
