The gum trees were introduced as an exotic and have entirely forgotten that — much like a good painting, they belong completely to the landscape they occupy.

Michael Albertyn Senior (born 1938, South Africa) is among the most widely collected South African landscape painters of the twentieth century, with work held in private and corporate collections both locally and internationally. He worked principally in oils, developing a confident impasto technique that gave particular authority to the rendering of rock, light, and the distinctive vegetation of the Western Cape. His mountain landscapes — painted with direct, loaded brushwork and an acute understanding of how afternoon light falls on sandstone and shale — found a ready market and have retained consistent collector interest. This work is a characteristic example of his mature output: a river gorge scene in the Cape tradition, painted with the assurance of an artist thoroughly at home in his subject.

The composition is built around a pair of tall gum trees occupying the left foreground, their pale trunks rendered with visible brushwork that captures the peeling, fibrous character of the bark. Hanging tendrils of bark and moss fall from the upper branches, which spread across the upper left of the canvas against a clear blue sky carrying a mass of cumulus cloud behind the mountain ridge. The right half of the composition is dominated by a steep mountain face of layered sandstone and shale, lit in warm ochre and amber tones with cool purple shadows in the deeper clefts and gullies. Scrubby indigenous trees cling to the lower slopes. In the middle ground a dirt road of pale sand and dirt curves away into the distance between the mountain flanks, edged with boulders and stands of dark reed grass. In the immediate foreground a still pool of opaque blue-green water reflects the trees, its edge marked by smooth rounded river stones rendered in thick, assured impasto. The palette throughout is warm and saturated, the paint surface confidently worked with no evidence of hesitation or overworking. The work is signed in white paint, lower left: Michael Albertyn.

The painting presents in excellent condition. The paint surface is stable with no visible cracking, lifting, or flaking. The impasto is fully intact throughout. The canvas shows no visible distortion or damage. The frame is a substantial moulded and gilded presentation frame with a limed wood inner slip and gilt inner fillet, in very good condition consistent with normal handling.
