What makes Norman Watson pieces instantly recognisable — and deeply special — is the trademark stamped into every piece: a figure of a rider on horseback, representing the legendary Dick King, one of the great heroes of KwaZulu-Natal history.

Dick King is best known for his extraordinary horseback ride in 1842, completing a journey of 960 kilometres in just 10 days to request help for the besieged British garrison at Port Natal — now Durban. A memorial statue of Dick King on his horse stands on the Victoria Embankment in Durban to this day, and it was this iconic image that Norman Watson chose as his registered trademark — stamped proudly onto every piece of silver that left his Durban workshop.

Norman Watson's marks consist of the Dick King horseman trademark, the abbreviation STG confirming sterling silver standard, the SABS lion's head mark, and the SABS year mark — all four of which are clearly visible in the hallmark photograph.

The ring itself is beautifully made — wide and straight-sided, framed by two crisp incised lines running parallel to both the upper and lower rims, giving the plain polished body a clean, architectural elegance. The mirror-bright surface is immaculate, retaining an excellent finish for its age.

Engraved neatly onto the front are the initials D.P.D. in refined italic script, beneath which the year 1953 is inscribed — almost certainly a special gift inscription marking a significant personal occasion. 1953 carries its own historical resonance — the year of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation, celebrated across the Commonwealth and across South Africa.
