A teapot this size was made for a table with people around it — it has never really been a solitary object.

Royal Albert introduced Cottage Garden in 1970, and the pattern occupies a quieter register than many of the factory's better-known designs. Where Old Country Roses fills every surface with abundance, Cottage Garden works with restraint — small clusters of pink roses and rosebuds in deep and pale pink, scattered across a white ground with trailing green foliage and occasional touches of pale blue. The effect is airy and unforced, the roses appearing in loose groupings rather than formal arrangements, as though gathered rather than placed. It is a pattern that has sustained a loyal following among Royal Albert collectors precisely because it does not insist on itself.

The teapot is the large size, suitable for six to eight cups. The body is of the classic full-bellied Royal Albert form, rising from a shaped foot with gilt ring to a generously rounded shoulder. The spout is long and curved, with a gilt rim at the tip. The handle is the scrolled Royal Albert form, white with gilt detail at the upper terminal. The domed lid is decorated with the Cottage Garden rose arrangement and carries a ribbed acorn knop in white with a gilt ring at its base. The rose clusters appear in three positions around the body, with smaller trailing sprays filling the spaces between, and the lid carries a further arrangement. The shaped foot ring, the scalloped rim of the lid well and the upper rim of the body are all gilt. The interior is clean and white throughout.

There are no chips, cracks, or crazing. The gilding is fully intact, with no rubbing or loss anywhere on the body, spout, handle, lid or foot. The teapot shows no signs of use.
