There is a version of the English cottage garden that exists only on china — tidier than any real garden, and considerably more permanent.

Royal Albert introduced Cottage Garden in 1970, and the pattern found its audience without difficulty. Its appeal rests on a particular quality of lightness: small clusters of pink roses and rosebuds in deep and pale pink, arranged in loose trailing groupings against a white ground with green foliage and scattered touches of pale blue. It is a pattern that earns its place through understatement rather than insistence, and has remained in production across several decades for precisely that reason. A set of six trios represents the pattern at its most useful — enough for a full table, in a design that suits both formal and informal occasions without effort.

Each trio comprises a teacup, saucer and side plate. The cup presents a gently flared form on a short footed base with a gilt foot ring, carrying the rose clusters on the exterior in three positions with a further spray visible inside the rim. The handle is the classic Royal Albert scrolled form, white with a gilt terminal. Each saucer repeats the rose arrangement across its well, with the pattern distributed freely around the border. The side plates carry a generous arrangement of the Cottage Garden roses, with clusters placed at intervals around the border and trailing sprays filling the spaces between. The scalloped edges of the saucers and side plates are gilt throughout, as are the rims and foot rings of the cups. All six trios are consistent in decoration and form.

There are no chips, cracks, or crazing on any piece across the set. The gilding is fully intact throughout all eighteen pieces, with no rubbing or loss. The set shows no signs of use.
