There is a particular ambition in china that fills the ground with gold rather than leaving it white — a decision that shifts the object from tableware into something closer to ornament.

Royal Albert has produced rose-pattern bone china under various names and treatments across much of the twentieth century, and the pieces that command the most attention among collectors are consistently those where the decoration makes no concession to restraint. This set belongs firmly in that category. The pattern — known as Old English Rose, a name researcher-confirmed and absent from the backstamp — places large crimson and deep pink roses with green foliage directly onto a ground of heavy burnished gilt. The effect is dense and warm, the roses appearing almost suspended in gold. The Avon shape, with its characteristic wide, gently flared bowl, scalloped rim and ornate scroll handle, was among Royal Albert's most prestigious forms and was reserved for patterns of this decorative weight.

Each trio comprises a teacup, saucer and side plate. The Avon cup presents a broad, shallow bowl that opens generously at the rim, supported on a short footed base with a double gilt ring. The scroll handle is fully gilt. The exterior carries the rose arrangement against the gold ground, continuing unbroken around the body. The interior repeats the pattern — roses and foliage set against gilt — leaving only the lower interior in white. Each saucer and side plate mirrors the decoration, with the rose and gilt border arranged around a clean white centre. The scalloped edges of all three pieces in each trio are gilt throughout. Six trios are included, sold as a set.

There are no chips, cracks, or crazing on any piece across the set. The gilding is heavy and fully intact throughout all eighteen pieces, with no rubbing, fading, or wear of any kind. The set shows no signs of use.
