Peggy Davies’s Character Kitten series for Royal Doulton, issued from 1941 and produced until 1985, remains one of the most enduring groups within the factory’s animal studies. Each of the six models captures a single, recognisable moment of feline behaviour in bone china. HN 2583 — the kitten licking its front paw — is among the most self-contained of the series, depicting the animal mid-groom, absorbed entirely in its own activity. The head is bowed, the tongue extended to meet the raised paw, the eyes closed in concentration. It is a pose that neither invites nor acknowledges attention, giving the figure a quiet independence as an object.

The figure is modelled seated, the body compact and rounded. The raised forepaw is held level with the muzzle, the tongue meeting it in the act of grooming. The facial expression carries a focused, slightly effortful quality. The colouring is a warm tortoiseshell palette of ginger-brown with darker brown and black striping across the head and back, with white to the chest and muzzle, and a dark-tipped curling tail. The brushwork is confident and follows the natural contours of the body. The glaze is high and even throughout. The base carries the green printed Royal Doulton Bone China mark together with the hand-painted model number HN 2583. No X suffix or date code is present.

There are no chips or cracks. The piece is in excellent condition with no condition issues present.
