A figure modelled in 1935 and withdrawn forty years later has earned its retirement — and the collector who finds one in this condition has found something worth keeping.

"Daffy Down Dilly" takes its name from the traditional English nursery rhyme celebrating the arrival of the daffodil and, by extension, of spring itself. The figure was introduced in 1935, during a period when Royal Doulton's figure range was expanding rapidly under the creative direction of Charles Noke and his successors, and the subject matter — a country flower seller carrying baskets of daffodils — reflects the pastoral and folkloric themes that characterised a significant strand of the HN series in the interwar and immediate post-war decades. HN1712 remained in production until 1975, giving it a forty-year production run that speaks to its sustained commercial appeal. Examples from the earlier decades of that run are distinguished by the softer, more hand-worked quality of the painting and the characteristic lustre glaze of Royal Doulton's mid-century production.

The figure depicts a standing young woman in country dress, her arms extended at either side, each hand holding a shallow basket filled with modelled daffodil blooms in cream and yellow. She wears a full-length gown in soft sage green with a wide pink and white checked apron over the skirt. A white fichu collar sits at the neckline, tied with a small bow. The sleeves are long with turned-back cuffs in pale pink. A broad-brimmed hat in grey-green with a red trim sits on her head, the brim framing a face modelled with a warm, open expression. The overall palette is soft and carefully balanced — the greens, pinks and creams working together with the yellow of the daffodils in a composition that is thoroughly considered.

There are no chips, cracks, crazing or restoration. The figure is in mint condition throughout, with all painted decoration and glaze fully intact.
