Royal Doulton's Flambe range stands apart from everything else the Burslem factory produced. Developed in the early twentieth century under the direction of Charles Noke, who spent years unlocking the reduction-firing secrets of Chinese oxblood glazes, Flambe required an entirely separate kiln process to achieve its characteristic depth of colour. Pieces were fired in a reducing atmosphere — starved of oxygen at critical temperature — which drove the copper in the glaze to produce the intense sang de boeuf red that defines the ware. The process is unpredictable by nature: each piece emerges from the kiln unique, and the factory could not guarantee an identical result twice. Flambe animal models, produced across several decades of the twentieth century, have become among the most consistently sought-after items in the Royal Doulton secondary market, combining the prestige of the Flambe technique with the accessibility of a small-scale decorative object.

This resting duck model is modelled low to the ground with the body settled, head tucked and turned to one side, the tail feathers rendered as a small upturned curl. The form is simplified and entirely resolved — no detail is superfluous, and the modelling relies entirely on the quality of the glaze rather than surface ornamentation. The Flambe glaze across the entire figure is a deep, uniform oxblood red, darkening to near-black in the recesses of the wings and tail, with a high-gloss finish that gives the surface considerable visual depth. The unglazed foot rim shows natural kiln grit consistent with the period firing process. The base carries the printed Royal Doulton crown and circle mark in dark pigment with "Made in England / Royal Doulton / England" and "FLAMBE" below, confirming authentic factory production.

Condition is excellent. No chips, cracks or glaze loss. The Flambe surface is intact throughout with no restoration or damage visible.
