Modelled by James Hadley (1837–1903), the most celebrated modeller in Royal Worcester’s history, this figure forms part of the Countries of the World series introduced in 1881 — a group that remains among the most collected of all Victorian porcelain figure sets. Each subject distils a national identity into a single, readable pose, intended to be understood at a glance.

‘Paddy’ — the Irishman — appears here as a slightly dishevelled but self-contained figure, hands in pockets, stance steady, expression quietly defiant. The modelling is confident and economical, with just enough exaggeration to create character without losing restraint — a balance Hadley handled exceptionally well.

This example is finished in the Shot Metal Or Tinted (S•M•O•T) enamel, one of Royal Worcester’s more technically accomplished decorative treatments. The surface carries a softly graduated metallic palette of gold, amber, and olive tones, giving the figure a depth and warmth not found in the more common blush ivory versions.

The contrast between the richly worked enamelled garments and the unglazed blush ivory face and hands is deliberate — drawing the eye immediately to the expression, which remains the focal point of the piece.

The underside retains the green printed factory mark alongside the S•M•O•T mark and impressed model number 835.

Condition

Excellent for its age. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Two minor surface irregularities to the jacket beneath the gilding — consistent with original production rather than later damage. Gilding remains strong and well preserved.
