Dutch Art Deco pottery occupies a particular place in the decorative arts — bold enough to be noticed across a room, considered enough to reward close inspection.

Royal Zuid Holland, known by its mark "Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland" and operating from Gouda in the Netherlands from 1892 to 1964, was one of the most accomplished and prolific of the Gouda potteries. The firm produced earthenware of consistently high quality throughout its existence, and its Art Deco output of the 1920s and 1930s represents some of the most visually assured ceramic work of the period produced anywhere in Europe. Gouda pottery of this era is characterised by hand-painted decoration of considerable freedom and confidence — the brushwork loose and direct, the colour relationships bold and deliberate, the forms generous and well-resolved. Royal Zuid Holland pieces from the Art Deco decades are actively collected internationally, and large-format examples in excellent condition are increasingly difficult to find.

The jug is of globular form, the body a full sphere set on a low, dark-glazed foot ring. A large loop handle in yellow rises from the shoulder and curves back to meet the body in a generous arc. The spout is formed as a wide, upward-curving pour with a dark brown inner glaze visible at the lip. The decoration is hand-painted across the full surface of the body: stylised orange spiral blooms on sinuous dark brown stems with broadly painted grey-green leaves, set against a ground of soft horizontal yellow banding on white. An orange and black band runs at the shoulder. The decorative vocabulary is thoroughly Art Deco in character — the spiralised flowers, the flat treatment of the foliage, and the strong colour contrasts all consistent with the Gouda aesthetic of the interwar decades. The painting is assured and confident throughout, with no hesitation in the brushwork.

There are no chips, cracks or damage to the body or decoration. The piece is in excellent condition throughout.
