Walker & Hall | Sterling Silver Three-Handled Tyg | Sheffield | 1929
Three handles around a single cup: a small silver echo of an older custom of drinking together.
Founded in Sheffield in the 1840s, Walker & Hall grew into one of the city’s leading makers of silver and electroplate. The tyg, a traditional English drinking vessel with multiple handles, is particularly associated with seventeenth-century pottery. By the early twentieth century, smaller silver interpretations were also made as presentation pieces, trophies and commemorative gifts.
The egg-shaped bowl stands on three slender legs ending in pad feet. Three handles rise from scrolled terminals at the rim and sweep down to meet the legs, so handle and leg read as one continuous line. The body is fully hallmarked below the rim for Walker & Hall, Sheffield, with the date letter m for 1929–30. The interior is plain silver.
Very good condition, with no dents or repairs.

Collector Appeal
Made by Walker & Hall in the final years of the 1920s, this tyg combines the traditional three-handled form with a fluid arrangement of scrolling handles and slender feet. Its fully hallmarked body, compact proportions and sculptural outline give it an appeal beyond its original commemorative or presentation associations.
The old tradition of a shared cup survives here in silver, long after the gathering itself has passed.
