Six Silver-Plated Apostle-Style Cake Forks | Cased Set | Mid-20th Century

A small object carries its history most clearly when its decoration outlasts its purpose — and the apostle figure has done exactly that.

The tradition of apostle-handled silver originates in late medieval Europe, where figural spoons bearing saints or apostles were given as christening gifts. By the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the motif had moved beyond its strictly religious origins into the decorative language of domestic silver and silver plate, where it persisted as a signifier of tradition, continuity, and craftsmanship. Sets such as this — produced in the mid-twentieth century — represent the final phase of that long evolution, retaining the form while adapting it to everyday use.

Each of the six forks is of matching form, with a broad three-tine head and a subtly bevelled left edge for pastry cutting. The stems taper cleanly from the bowl into a fluted handle with engraved cross-banding at the shoulder. The terminals are cast as identical robed figures, standing upright with arms folded across the chest in a composed, devotional stance — a simplified apostle type rendered for repeated production. The casting is crisp, and the transition between handle and figure is cleanly resolved.

The forks retain a bright, even silver-plated finish throughout, with no visible wear to the plating or exposure of base metal. They are housed in their original fitted presentation case, covered in burgundy grained leatherette with a brass clasp and hinge. The interior is lined in red satin and velvet, with individual retaining loops for each fork. The case shows age-consistent wear to the exterior and light tarnishing to the brass hardware; the interior remains clean and well-preserved.
