The original series of prints — depicting the street vendors, hawkers and traders who were a defining feature of Georgian London — has captivated collectors and artists since the eighteenth century, when printmakers such as Paul Sandby and later Francis Wheatley immortalised these figures in watercolour and engraving. Wheatley's 'Cries of London', produced between 1792 and 1795, became the canonical version of the subject: thirteen large-format prints showing elegantly rendered street sellers against softly painted urban backgrounds, combining social documentation with considerable pictorial charm. The teacup is of a broad, gently flared form with a scalloped rim and a simple loop handle with a small gold accent at the upper terminal. The exterior carries the full gold dog-rose border: an all-over transfer of open five-petalled flowers, buds and leafy stems in bright gold, covering the upper half of the cup exterior from rim to mid-body. The lower half and foot of the cup are plain white bone china with a fine gold line at the rim. The interior of the cup is decorated with a matching gold floral border at the rim and carries the Cries of London vignette in the well — a full-colour transfer print within a soft oval of warm ochre ground, depicting the relevant street scene in the manner of Wheatley's engravings. The saucer follows the identical decorative scheme: a wide gold dog-rose border to the rim, the Cries of London vignette at centre, and a fine gold line at the edge. The side plate — approximately 17cm in diameter — carries the same border and the same central vignette, here given more space on the larger surface, allowing the full scene to be appreciated in detail. The scalloped edges of all three pieces are finished with a bright gold line. The backstamp, printed in green, reads: bone china / Springfield / made in england, in an oval format.

Condition

Excellent. All three pieces of each trio are free from chips, cracks and crazing. The gilding is in excellent condition throughout — the dog-rose border, the rim lines and the handle accent show no significant rubbing or loss, retaining good brightness and coverage consistent with light or careful use. The transfer vignettes are crisp and unfaded. A very pleasing set in honest, display-ready condition.
