The pomander — from the French pomme d’ambre, or “apple of amber” — originated in the medieval period as a container for aromatic substances believed to guard against disease. By the nineteenth century, the object had shifted from medicine to domestic ritual, used instead to scent interiors, linen drawers, and wardrobes. Its survival into the twentieth century reflects not the persistence of the belief, but the enduring appeal of controlled fragrance within the home.

This example was produced in Staffordshire bone china for Woods of Windsor, the long-established English fragrance house founded in 1770 and associated with traditional floral perfumery. The commissioning of such wares aligns with the brand’s positioning in the quality gift and domestic accessories market, where scent and object are intended to function together.

The form is a near-perfect sphere in fine white bone china, decorated with transfer-printed floral sprays in clear, balanced colour. A large pink rose dominates the upper body, accompanied by amber-toned roses, small blue flowers, and mixed green foliage, arranged in a naturalistic bouquet. The decoration continues in lighter sprays across the lower hemisphere. Two bands of small pierced holes encircle the body, allowing fragrance to diffuse when the piece is in use. The base is fitted with a removable plastic plug, permitting the interior to be filled with scented material.

The base carries the printed mark: “Staffordshire Bone China / Made in England / For Woods of Windsor.”

There are no chips, cracks, or restoration. The transfer decoration remains bright and intact. The interior is empty, retaining only a faint trace of prior scent.
