Glass holds colour differently from any other material — not on its surface but within itself, suspended and luminous, as if the light source were inside rather than outside the object.

The rise of studio glass in the second half of the twentieth century repositioned the blown vessel from functional object to sculptural form. Freed from the constraints of factory production, makers began to explore colour, density and internal structure as primary elements of design. Among the most effective of these approaches is the use of coloured inclusions worked into the molten gather, creating movement within the body of the glass itself rather than applied decoration. This piece is unsigned, and no specific studio attribution has been established — placing the emphasis, as it should be, entirely on the object.

This vessel is of generous ovoid form with a wide circular opening and a rounded base that sits securely without a foot. The body is blown in a rich teal blue, with white inclusions drawn and folded through the glass to create a layered internal composition of swirling streaks and suspended trails. These inclusions shift in density and direction throughout the body, producing a sense of depth and movement that changes with both light and viewing angle. The surface is smooth and high-gloss, with a cleanly finished rim. Viewed from above, the interior resolves into a concentrated spiral centred on the pontil mark, giving the impression of motion held in suspension. Small air bubbles are visible within the glass — inherent to the hand-blown process and part of the material’s character.

The vessel is in excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks or scratches to the rim or body.
