The Dala horse is one of those rare folk objects that has become so widely reproduced that finding a genuine hand-painted example of quality is more satisfying than it might appear.

The Dala horse — Dalahäst in Swedish — originates in the Dalarna region of central Sweden, where the tradition of carving and painting wooden horses developed among forestry workers and craftsmen from at least the seventeenth century onwards. The horses were originally made as toys and gifts, carved by hand from pine during the long winter months and painted in the bold, stylised manner characteristic of the region's folk art tradition. By the twentieth century the Dala horse had become Sweden's most recognised folk art object and one of the country's most enduring cultural symbols, produced by a number of workshops in the Dalarna villages of Nusnäs and Rättvik to traditional standards of hand-carving and hand-painting. The decoration follows the Kurbits tradition — a distinctive Swedish folk painting style featuring curling floral and foliate motifs derived from biblical imagery, applied with confident, free brushwork in a limited palette of strong colours. The orange-red ground is the most traditional and most sought-after Dala horse colourway, associated above all with the Dalarna region itself.

The horse is of substantial size, carved from solid wood and painted in the traditional orange-red ground colour. The Kurbits decoration is applied to the saddle area and neck in cream, red, yellow, green and blue — curling floral medallions, scrolling foliage and dot details rendered with the assured, practised hand of a trained folk painter. A white bridle and facial detail are painted on the head. The carving is clean and well-resolved, with the characteristic simplified but confident form of a quality Dala horse — the broad, solid body, the upright head and the four square-set legs that give the form its particular solidity and presence.

The paintwork is in excellent condition with no chips, flaking or damage. The carved body is sound throughout with no splits or repairs.
