The Art Nouveau movement understood that beauty and function need not be separated — and the figural vase, where the vessel and the figure become one continuous form, remains one of its most recognisable legacies.

Unicorn Studio, Inc., an American producer of decorative porcelain, built its reputation on revivalist interpretations of historic European styles. Drawing particularly on Art Nouveau, the factory produced figural works that echo the movement’s defining motifs — flowing female forms, organic line, and the integration of nature into structure — translated for the late 20th-century decorative market.

This vase is a well-resolved example of that approach. The form is asymmetrical and fluid: a gourd-shaped lower body rising into a tall, curving neck with a dramatically flared, swept lip, the opening angled to enhance the sense of movement. The lower body is glazed in soft sage green, graduating to cream at the neck, while the interior of the lip carries a pale sky-blue glaze.

Applied in full three-dimensional relief is a standing female figure rendered in the Art Nouveau manner. She is dressed in a flowing gown in white and pale lavender tones, her auburn hair partially gathered and then trailing downward, visually merging into the neck of the vessel so that figure and form become inseparable. Her expression is contemplative, with downcast eyes and a softly turned profile, one hand raised toward her chin.

The naturalistic theme is extended through four applied poppies: two fully open blooms, one partially open flower, and a single bud with seed pod, supported by low-relief meadow grasses across the body. The palette — sage green, cream, sky blue, soft lavender, and coral red — is restrained and cohesive, allowing the modelling to remain the focus.

The base carries the Unicorn Studio Fine Porcelain backstamp in gilt.

The vase is in excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks, or losses to the figure or any of the applied elements.
