A photograph needs a frame in the same way a thought needs a sentence — not to contain it, but to make it visible.

Franz Collection was established in 1993 and built its international reputation on porcelain that unites functional objects with ambitious three-dimensional sculptural design. The Papillon Butterfly series — designed by Jen Woo and sculpted here by Chih Kun — is among the most recognisable of the company's output, extending beyond tableware into decorative objects intended for display within the interior.

The photo frame, pattern FZ00331, was issued in 2004 under licence through Seagull Decor Co. Ltd and distributed internationally by Enesco Ltd. It functions as a companion piece to the Papillon table service, translating the series' naturalistic vocabulary into a format designed to hold and present an image.

The frame is of tall, asymmetric organic form, rising from a splayed base into a sweeping, upswept apex. The body is modelled as a broad, curving leaf, glazed in graduated tones of cream, pale green and celadon, with brushed veining across the surface. A large three-dimensional butterfly is positioned centrally, its wings fully spread and hand-painted in amber, orange, mauve and brown with white spotted markings; the body is rendered in a deep brownish-red. At the lower edge, an applied white narcissus bloom with a yellow centre anchors the composition, while a curving green stem forms a lateral support element.

The oval photo aperture is set within the composition and retains its original Franz-branded protective insert. The reverse is finished in plain cream porcelain. The base carries the blue underglaze Franz mark, red seal stamp, pattern number FZ00331, and the signatures of both designer and sculptor. The original Franz box is present.

There are no chips, cracks, or paint loss. All applied elements, including the butterfly and floral detailing, are intact. The original box shows light storage wear consistent with age.

Collector Appeal

Papillon remains one of the most widely recognised and actively collected Franz series, with strong appeal among buyers drawn to sculptural porcelain that bridges functional and decorative categories. The presence of both designer and sculptor signatures, the original box, and the survival of all applied elements place this example firmly at the upper end of retail desirability within the range.
