A napkin ring exists to mark a place — and Jen Woo understood that a place worth marking deserves something more than utility.

Franz Collection, established in Taiwan in 1993, built its international reputation on porcelain that unites functional tableware with finely resolved three-dimensional sculpture. The Papillon Butterfly series — designed by Jen Woo and sculpted by Chin I — is among the most recognisable and widely collected of the company's output. Pattern FZ00500, issued in 2003 under licence through Seagull Decor Co. Ltd and distributed by Enesco Ltd, forms part of the extended Papillon table service. Each piece is individually hand-painted using lead-free glazes. This example is the original two-piece set as issued.

Each napkin ring is formed as an open oval loop in graduated tones of mauve-pink softening into pale cream. The loop rises from an organic base composed of applied green leaf forms with serrated edges and defined tips. At the junction of loop and base, a white narcissus bloom with a yellow centre is applied in relief.

At the apex of each ring, a three-dimensional butterfly is perched with wings held upright and slightly open — hand-painted in amber, orange-red, and warm brown, with white spotted markings and fine dark veining. The bodies are rendered in deep brownish-purple. The composition reads as a naturalistic stem and bloom through which the napkin is threaded, maintaining the illusion of growth rather than construction.

The bases carry the blue underglaze Franz mark, red seal stamp, pattern number FZ00500, and the signatures of both Jen Woo and Chin I. The original Franz box and accompanying catalogue booklet are present.

There are no chips, cracks, or paint loss. All sculptural elements, including the butterflies and applied florals, are intact throughout.

Collector Appeal

Part of the extended Papillon Butterfly service, these napkin rings are among the less frequently encountered functional forms within the range. Complete sets with original packaging and documentation are increasingly uncommon. Their appeal lies in their position as both usable tableware and sculptural objects, making them particularly attractive to collectors assembling a complete Papillon service or seeking display pieces beyond the standard tea set forms.
