Grimwades of Stoke-on-Trent registered the Royal Winton trade name in the late nineteenth century and by the 1930s had become the dominant force in English chintz ware — the distinctive all-over floral transfer printing that covered every surface of a piece, inside and out, leaving no ground visible. The chintz patterns produced at the Winton Pottery became objects of intense collector desire from the 1980s onwards, driving significant premiums for original prewar and postwar examples. Florence, introduced in the 1950s, was among the final patterns of the original production run and is immediately distinguished from its predecessors by its black ground — a departure from the cream grounds of Summertime, Sweet Pea, and Welbeck that gives the polychrome transfer an exceptional vibrancy and depth. The demand for Royal Winton chintz was by the 1990s sufficiently sustained that Grimwades Ltd. undertook a formal revival programme, reissuing a number of the most beloved patterns using the original lithographic transfers and original shape moulds. Florence was among the patterns selected for this revival, and the 1995 production pieces are date-stamped on the backstamp, making them fully identifiable as revival rather than original production — a distinction that matters to serious collectors but does nothing to diminish the visual impact of the pattern itself.

This trio comprises a teacup, saucer, and side plate in the Florence pattern on black ground. The cup is a generous rounded form with shaped gilt handle; the saucer and side plate both carry the characteristic Royal Winton scalloped edge with gilt rim line. The Florence transfer covers every exterior surface completely — cup exterior, saucer face, and side plate face — in a dense, exuberant arrangement of large-scale tropical and garden flowers: hibiscus, carnations, lilies, and mixed smaller blooms in coral, pink, yellow, cream, and powder blue against the deep black ground, with bright green foliage throughout. The cup interior and underside are left in plain cream white. The gilt rim line runs the full perimeter of all three pieces.

The trio is in mint unused condition. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing on any piece. The gilding is in perfect condition throughout — fully intact on all three rim lines and the cup handle, with no wear, rubbing, or loss of any kind.
