There are Royal Albert patterns, and then there is Heirloom. This is not a comparison anyone who has seen it in person would dispute.

Royal Albert began its life in 1896 at the Albert Works in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent — named in honour of Queen Victoria's beloved consort — and went on to become one of the most celebrated names in English bone china. Among the many patterns produced across that distinguished history, Heirloom (pattern no. 4534) stands entirely apart. It is the pattern that collectors seek first, describe in superlatives, and part with last. Bold, opulent, and uncompromisingly rich in its palette and gilding, it represents Royal Albert at the very peak of its decorative ambition.

The design draws on the great tradition of Imari — the style originating in Arita, Japan, that swept through European ceramics from the 17th century onwards and gave rise to some of the finest decorative china ever produced on English soil. Heirloom is Imari-styled, with cobalt blue, deep red and green, and an abundance of 22 carat gold gilding. On each piece, a deep cobalt blue ground frames a series of large shaped cartouches in white, within which garlands of roses and foliage in burnt orange, deep red and yellow-green cascade over swags and bows rendered in rust-red and gold. Diamond-shaped medallions in the cobalt ground carry single floral motifs in orange on a stippled ground. Connecting all of it, a continuous rhythm of gold scrollwork — sinuous, flowing, generously applied — unifies the composition and gives the pattern its extraordinary sense of richness and movement. The handled cake plate in particular is a tour de force: the entire broad border alive with Imari panels separated by gold scrolls, the plain white centre anchored by a single fine gold ring, the shaped handles gilded and moulded. The backstamp to the base — the early orange crown mark reading Royal Albert Bone China England Heirloom — dates these pieces firmly to the 1950s–1960s Staffordshire production era, before UK manufacture ceased in 2002. This is the real thing, made at the height of Royal Albert's powers.

The three pieces presented here are in mint, unused condition throughout. The gilding — and with Heirloom, the gilding is everything — is 100% intact on every surface of all three pieces. No chips. No cracks. No crazing. This is exactly the condition level that makes serious collectors stop scrolling.

Three pieces in Royal Albert Heirloom pattern (no. 4534), all in mint unused condition. The large handled cake plate is of circular form with shaped tab handles, the broad cobalt blue border filled with alternating large Imari cartouches and diamond medallions, all outlined and connected by flowing gold scrollwork, the plain white well edged with a single gold ring, the handles gilded. The large milk jug is of generous capacious form with a shaped scalloped rim, scroll handle fully gilded, the body decorated with large Imari cartouche panels on cobalt blue ground with gold scrollwork, interior glazed cream-white. The large open sugar bowl is of deep hemispherical form on a footed base, the exterior fully decorated with Imari cartouche panels on cobalt blue ground with gold scrollwork throughout, interior glazed clean cream-white, gold rim line. All three pieces carry the early orange crown backstamp: Royal Albert Bone China England Heirloom.

Condition
Mint and unused throughout — all three pieces. No chips, no cracks, no crazing on any piece. The 22ct gilding on all rims, handles, scrollwork and medallions is in perfect, unrubbed, bright condition across every surface. Interior glazes are clean and unstained. This is an exceptional condition level for a pattern of this age and desirability, and it significantly enhances the value of the set.
