Royal Albert's Memory Lane is one of the most enduringly popular patterns in the company's extensive twentieth-century catalogue, and its appeal is not difficult to understand. Where many Royal Albert designs relied on the drama of cobalt grounds and heavy gilding, Memory Lane took the opposite approach: an ivory-white bone china ground of exceptional translucency, a delicate border of forget-me-not sprays in pale blue, lavender and soft pink, and the most restrained gold line detailing at the rim and foot. The result is a pattern of genuine lightness — one that has remained consistently sought-after on the secondary market for decades and which continues to attract collectors building or completing a service.

The blue crown backstamp, with the pattern name in script, dates production to the 1970s–1980s, the later Staffordshire era of Royal Albert manufacture. The teacup is of the classic Royal Albert form: a gently flared, slightly lobed body on a domed foot with a scrolling handle. The exterior carries the Memory Lane forget-me-not border — sprays in pale to medium blue with yellow centres, interspersed with smaller blooms in soft lavender and pink on slender green stems — running around the full circumference of the upper body and continuing inside the cup below the rim. The rim and foot carry fine gold lines. The saucer is circular with a gently scalloped rim finished with a gold line, the forget-me-not border encircling the rim and the well left plain. The circular side plate carries the same border treatment, the sprays running continuously around the full circumference with the centre left plain, the rim finished with a gold line throughout. The backstamp reads: ROYAL ALBERT / BONE CHINA / ENGLAND / Memory Lane, surmounted by the blue crown device.

Condition

Good used condition. Free from chips, cracks and crazing. The bone china body is clean and the transfer decoration is crisp. There is gilding loss on the saucer and side plate rims, and some light surface marks consistent with careful regular use over several decades — honest, age-appropriate wear.
