"Top O' The Hill" was introduced in 1937, modelled by Leslie Harradine, and went on to become one of the most enduring and widely collected figures in the entire Royal Doulton HN series. The copyright date of 1937 appears on the backstamp alongside the full Royal Doulton Tableware Limited mark, placing this example within the original production line of one of Harradine's most celebrated compositions. The figure depicts a young woman at the top of a hill, her full skirt caught in the wind, one hand raised to secure her wide-brimmed hat against the breeze — a moment of movement and animation that Harradine captured with the same instinctive understanding of pose and gesture that distinguishes his finest work. HN1834 is the red colourway, the original and most sought-after version of the model, and it is this colourway that collectors identify most closely with the figure's enduring appeal. The backstamp carries the modeller's signature alongside the figure name, HN number and copyright date — a fully documented and unambiguous example.

The figure depicts a young woman in a sweeping red dress with a yellow-lined underskirt, the full skirt caught in fluid movement. She wears a wide-brimmed hat in yellow-green with a dark red brim and a blue ribbon trim, one hand raised to hold it against the wind. A white fichu sits at the neckline with green sprig detail. The modelling of the face is refined and expressive, with a warm, forward-looking quality characteristic of Harradine's lady figures at their most accomplished. The red of the skirt is deep and richly glazed, with the characteristic tonal variation of Royal Doulton's mid-century figure production. The figure stands on a plain unglazed base.
