Royal Worcester | James Hadley | ‘Paddy’, The Irishman | Countries of the World | Shot Enamel | 1902

A figure designed to stand for a nation carries a particular weight: not the weight of accuracy, but of recognition, which is often the heavier thing.

James Hadley (1837–1903), one of Royal Worcester’s most accomplished nineteenth-century figure modellers, became the factory’s principal modeller by 1870 and later supplied designs from his own studio. His Countries of the World series, dating in design to the early 1880s, gives each nation a single figure meant to be read at a glance. This example of ‘Paddy’, the Irishman, was made in 1902, as the factory’s year marks show.

Paddy stands with his hands clasped behind his back, against his coat tails, and leans against a post on a paved base with canted corners. He wears a brimmed hat, a gold-lapelled coat over a russet waistcoat with gilt buttons, an olive-green shirt and knee breeches. His head is tilted, and his downturned mouth gives him a weary, self-contained expression.

The figure is decorated in Royal Worcester’s Shot Enamel, in warm amber, russet, olive and gold tones, and the pale ivory-toned face stands out against the coloured clothing. The underside carries the green printed Royal Worcester mark with “England” and the Shot Enamel wording, and the printed shape number 835.

Excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. There are two small irregularities in the surface of the jacket beneath the gilding, confirmed as original manufacturing characteristics.

Collector Appeal

Hadley’s Countries of the World figures are of continuing interest to collectors. This one brings together a documented model and shape number, clear factory marks, a firm date and the warm Shot Enamel palette. It stands well on its own, and sits naturally alongside other nations from the series.

It is the kind of object that reads immediately, but rewards closer inspection, which is often where lasting value sits.
