To model a nation in porcelain is to fix it at a particular moment — not as it was, but as it was imagined to be, which is a different and more durable thing.

James Hadley (1837–1903), the most accomplished modeller in Royal Worcester’s history, produced the Countries of the World series as a sequence of character figures rendered with both technical precision and a distinctly Victorian sense of national identity. The series includes the Irishman, the Yankee, the Chinese, the Hindoo, the Italian, John Bull, the Scotsman, the Russian, and the Welsh figures, with model numbers ranging from 835 through to 1875.

The Welshman — model 1875 — represents one of the later additions to the series and is depicted as a rural countryman in a tall hat, long coat and breeches, carrying a bundle over his shoulder. The base carries the green printed Worcester S•M•O•T England mark confirming the Shot Metal Or Tinted enamel colourway, together with the Registered Design number RdNo 275721, placing the registration of this model variant at approximately 1896. The impressed model number 1875 is present. This figure forms a natural companion to The Irishman (model 835), listed separately.

The figure stands on an integral chamfered rectangular base, leaning slightly forward with an easy, natural distribution of weight. The tall top hat is finished in burnished copper-gold. The long coat is rendered in the characteristic shot enamel technique — a metallic gold-olive tone that shifts under changing light — worn over a buttoned waistcoat. Breeches and stockings are in warm blush ivory, with buckled shoes picked out in gilt. A bundle is carried over the right shoulder, rendered in contrast to the metallic coat. A russet bow tie completes the figure. The face and hair are left in unglazed blush ivory, providing a deliberate tonal contrast against the enamelled surfaces.

A hairline crack runs across the full width of the base and must be noted. It does not affect the structural integrity of the figure and is not visible in normal display. There are no chips, losses, or repairs to the figure itself. The shot enamel surfaces remain intact and well-preserved, with strong colour and finish throughout.
