Some objects are made to be used. Some are made to be admired. And some — very rarely — are made entirely for joy.

Stuart Devlin (1931–2018) was born in Geelong, Australia, and became one of the 20th century's most celebrated and sought-after goldsmiths and silversmiths. His path to London began unexpectedly: he entered a competition to design Australia's first decimal coinage, winning against all probability, and the success propelled him to London where he opened his own workshop and began developing the limited-edition collector's pieces for which he is now most famous. The accolades followed swiftly. In 1982, Devlin was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment as Goldsmith and Jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen, and from 1996 to 1997 he served as Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths' Company. The original booklet accompanying this piece records the assessment of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths at the time of production: Stuart Devlin, they declared, was the designer with the Midas touch. It is not a description many would argue with.

The 'Surprise' eggs were produced in small limited editions and represent the most collectable and personal expression of Devlin's genius. Hidden within the textured silver-gilt shell are intricate creations in gilt and enamel — flora, fauna, or figurative scenes — revealed only when the upper half is lifted away. Devlin described these objects as made entirely for delight: "to surprise, to intrigue — made entirely for enjoyment." This example, numbered 70 from an edition of 500, opens to reveal an extraordinary interior: a densely composed bouquet of three sculptural sunflowers in ruby red enamel and dark gilt, their petals fully formed and three-dimensional, rising from a mass of slender dark leaves on a golden enamel ground. The contrast between the austere, finely textured exterior and the explosion of colour and craft within is entirely deliberate — and entirely captivating.

The hallmarks on the base of the lower shell are full and sharp: the SD maker's mark in the characteristic oval cartouche, the London assay office lion passant, and the date letter confirming 1980. The edition number 70/500 is also struck to the base. Both upper and lower halves carry marks. The piece is presented in its original dark green leather-covered presentation box with crimson silk and velvet interior stamped Stuart Devlin, London in gold script — and accompanied by the original signed gold booklet, bearing the maker's signature and the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths' endorsement. In over fifty years of Devlin collecting, complete sets with original case and booklet represent the top tier of the market.

Description
A substantial egg of ovoid form, the entire outer surface finished in Devlin's signature closely textured bark-effect silver-gilt — a surface treatment that catches the light with extraordinary complexity and serves as the perfect foil to the opulent interior. The egg separates horizontally at the equator, the join fitted with a polished gold-coloured band mount. The lower half forms the base; the upper half lifts cleanly away to reveal the surprise. The interior of the lower section is lined in translucent amber-gold enamel, from which rises the three-dimensional sculptural bouquet: three fully realised sunflower heads in deep red-orange enamel with dark textured petals, their centres in hammered gold, surrounded by a dense arrangement of long, slender dark leaves in oxidised silver rising dramatically upward. The effect is vivid, theatrical, and technically superb. The hallmarks to the base of the lower shell are clearly struck: maker's mark SD (oval), lion passant, date letter, and the edition number 70. The original presentation box is in good condition with intact gilt interior lettering. The signed gold booklet is present and complete.

Condition
Very good to excellent. The silver-gilt exterior retains strong, even gilding throughout with no significant rubbing or loss. The enamel to the interior flowers is vivid and intact — no losses, chips or crazing to the enamel visible. The amber ground enamel to the lower interior is fully intact. The hallmarks are sharp and fully legible. The presentation box shows light age wear to exterior corners consistent with storage over 45 years — the interior remains excellent. The booklet is present and complete. This is a well-preserved example at a condition level that fully supports premium pricing.
